School district reports test scores rise with mastery learning on Khan Academy

Jue, 2018-09-06 07:44

We’re happy to share new research results for mastery learning on Khan Academy and a new video that shows how mastery learning works.

The Centennial School District in Warminster, Pennsylvania, reports that middle school students who spent at least 30 minutes per week doing mastery learning on Khan Academy had 33% higher growth on the NWEA MAP mathematics assessment than students who used Khan Academy for less than 15 minutes per week. Elementary school students had 19% higher growth.

Kudos to the kids at Centennial for all their hard work!

Mastery learning is an educational philosophy centered on self-paced learning. Unlike traditional learning, students in mastery-learning classrooms are not pushed ahead in lockstep, which can cause the accumulation of debilitating “Swiss-cheese” gaps in knowledge.

In mastery learning, students learn at their own pace. They progress through questions and quizzes at just the right level for them. They get feedback as they learn and help when they need it most. Teachers track student progress, identify gaps, and give students one-on-one attention to help them succeed.

Mastery learning is backed by decades of research. The noted researcher Benjamin Bloom first coined the term mastery learning in 1968 and published a seminal 1984 study that documented its promise. A 1994 analysis of nearly 300 studies on mastery learning found that mastery learning has a “positive effect on achievement at all levels and for all subjects and results in positive affective outcomes for students and teachers.”

Mastery lessons on Khan Academy are available for K–12 math, grammar, high school biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, AP Statistics, AP Government and Politics, and AP Macroeconomics.

We’ll add new subjects with mastery throughout the school year. Onward!

LearnStorm sign-ups now open!

Mar, 2018-08-14 13:51

LearnStorm, our free back-to-school program, is back for a second year and open for teacher registration!

LearnStorm gives teachers a powerful tool to jumpstart the school year. Teachers can assign personalized practice and research-backed growth mindset activities that teach students how the brain gets stronger and smarter with new learning.  We’re proud to have worked with PERTS, a Stanford research center, on this year’s expanded growth mindset curriculum.

Students get real-time feedback and master skills as they progress through LearnStorm. Together, teachers and students celebrate progress on an interactive tracker, unlocking individual and class prizes as they go.

Watch some very excited students celebrating their LearnStorm success.

LearnStorm runs Tuesday, September 4 through Friday, November 9. Teachers can easily enroll using a Khan Academy account.

Last year, LearnStorm reached nearly one million students and 24,000 teachers in the US, with schools in all 50 states participating. Approximately 98% of teachers surveyed said they plan to use LearnStorm again this year. In pilots of LearnStorm, 96% of students reported their learning confidence increased while using Khan Academy.

LearnStorm is made possible through the generosity of MathWorks, a Massachusetts-based developer of software for scientists and engineers and a sponsor of LearnStorm.

Our new app adds interactivity to classics from Super Simple Songs

Lun, 2018-08-06 12:40

Our new, free, educational program, Khan Academy Kids, is designed to inspire young children to become learners for life. The app seamlessly intertwines animation and puppetry from Super Simple Songs® with interactive, educational activities covering early literacy, math, language arts, creative thinking, and social-emotional skills.

Khan Academy is thrilled to partner with Skyship Entertainment™, the creator of the beloved Super Simple Songs.  “We are excited to collaborate with Skyship because of our shared commitment to making sure children everywhere have access to a quality education,” said Caroline Hu Flexer, head of Khan Academy Kids.

Skyship Entertainment was started by two teachers who had the idea of combining favorite children’s songs with learning. “Our focus has always been making learning simple and fun, so we’re thrilled for Super Simple Songs to be part of Khan Academy Kids,” said Skyship Entertainment cofounder Troy McDonald. “We can’t think of any organization more passionate about education than Khan Academy.”

Super Simple Song’s beloved children’s classics are integrated into a wide range of educational activities in Khan Academy Kids to create a unique learning experience. Below are examples of what kids and parents can expect to see in the app:

Practice adding and subtracting with “Five Little Ducks”.

Strengthen foundational reading skills and rhyming with “Five Speckled Frogs”.

Khan Academy Kids is available now in the App Store and in beta for Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.

Have you seen our new look?

Mar, 2018-07-24 12:14

We’re delighted to share the new logo that you’ll begin seeing across Khan Academy’s offerings in the coming days:

Our logo is new, but it reflects Khan Academy’s core values, which haven’t changed over time. Its shape and bright color reflect the joy of learning and the transformational power of education. The hexagon is a fundamental building block in math, nature, and art. And, we’ve retained the leaf symbol from our previous logo—a classic metaphor for personal growth, which we care deeply about.

Our new logo is a celebration of the passion for learning that we value as an organization and a community.

We’d love to hear what you think in comments. If you plan to use the new logo in your classroom, we’d love to hear how.

You might be wondering why we updated our logo. It’s a pretty simple: Khan Academy is always growing and improving, and we need a logo that keeps up. We’ve evolved from a single website for desktops to multiple apps available across many devices. In our early days, we were known for math videos, but today we offer personalized learning across many subjects and every grade. Just this week we launched a new mastery learning system and new lessons for back to school!

Our new logo is flexible enough to work in a variety of settings. We think it looks great on devices, dashboards, app stores, laptops, and desktops. And, we love using it across our many platforms.

As you’re using Khan Academy to learn or to teach, we hope you’ll enjoy seeing our new logo out of the corner of your eye. Thanks for being part of a terrific community that celebrates learning and growth. Onward!

Khan Academy introduces something big for little learners

Jue, 2018-07-12 11:21

Today we’re announcing something entirely new: an education program for children ages two to five designed to inspire lifelong learning.

Khan Academy Kids is available now in the App Store and in beta for Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. Like all our educational offerings, Khan Academy Kids is 100% free. It’s part of our mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. (We’re a proud 501©(3) nonprofit organization that offers all our resources free to students and teachers.)

With thousands of original activities, books, videos, and lessons, Khan Academy Kids combines subjects like math and reading with creative activities like drawing and storytelling.

We worked with childhood experts from the Stanford Graduate School of Education and children’s book authors to create the app. Our curriculum and library of books teach academic skills as well as social-emotional development and healthy habits.

Animated animals from around the worlds—aren’t they cute?—guide children through educational materials at just the right level for them.  As kids learn, they collect bugs, hats, and toys for their favorite characters.

While many early learning apps focus on a narrow skill area, Khan Academy Kids is a complete learning experience across multiple subjects that is aligned to the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework for preschool-aged children and Common Core State Standards for kindergarten-aged children. The program is designed to adapt over the years as a child grows.

Khan Academy Kids was created by our award-winning early learning team,  whose educational materials have won 21 Parents’ Choice Awards, received 18 Editor’s Choice Awards from Children’s Technology Review, and been voted the best children’s app at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Parent participation is a key component of the Khan Academy Kids experience. Parents can engage in learning activities with their child, and we encourage moms and dads to read our interactive books out loud. Parents can also view their child’s progress on activities in the Library and set up accounts for multiple children, all for free.

Extra special thanks to the Khan Academy Kids partners who provide free learning materials: Super Simple Songs® from Skyship Entertainment™, Bellwether Media, and National Geographic Young Explorer Magazine. We’re grateful for their contributions!

Khan Academy Kids is made possible through generous support from Omidyar Network and Windsong Trust as well as kind donations from people like you. Thank you for your support, and onward!
